The size and performance of the full-range speaker unit are related

2021 04/23

From the current radiation analysis of electrodynamic speakers, we can know that, in general, there are the following conclusions:

1 Size is proportional to sensitivity and low frequency. For speaker units of similar design, the larger the radiation area, the lower the starting frequency low-frequency . In the speaker industry, it is generally expressed as the -3dB of the system. (Note that this is the low frequency response F3 value of the system (referring to a system that includes the speaker cable, speaker cabinet, speaker unit, and filter (if any)), not a single speaker unit F0 value. Refers to the Fo of the speaker unit itself. For example, a Japanese full-frequency unit may have a Fo only 50Hz, but its Qes is as low as 0.25, then the F3 of this unit may be as high as 80Hz after assemble in the cabinet.

2. The size is inversely proportional to the high frequency. This is also easy to understand. The larger the area, the greater the vibration mass, and therefore the less high-frequency components that can be radiated. This is similar to a non-synchronous "energy conservation" principle.
3.The size and directivity are inversely proportional. It is easy to understand that when the equivalent area increases, the vibration mode determines that the off-axis radiated energy becomes less and less. Therefore, many large-caliber units need to use phase plugs or waveguides to partially improve this problem. For example, a Norwegian brand of 8-inch full-band adds a mushroom-shaped waveguide. According to the [principle of energy-like conservation" mentioned above, it is assumed that the radiation energy on the 0 axis of the unit itself can just meet the needs of listening, but in order to improve the directivity of this type of large-aperture unit, the off-axis energy after the waveguide is increased It is indeed a bit too much, but this one is separated from the 0 axis, so it will cause problems with the 0 axis radiation. The seriousness of the problem is that most manufacturers currently do not realize this, or after realizing this, they have increased the output of the 0 axis in the high frequency range (you can see that the curve given by some unit manufacturers is very high at the high end. High), the off-axis is perfect at this time, but the 0-axis is high again, what should I do? In most cases, manufacturers will add a low-Q notch filter in order to solve this problem from the circuit. . . Therefore, it can be seen that the large-caliber (specifically 6.5-inch or more) full-frequency unit is contradictory in this regard and is unsolvable (currently).

4. Distortion. The design of the high-sensitivity unit currently dominating the mainstream seeks high sensitivity unilaterally, and therefore requires a large size. At the same time, it is necessary to reach a higher upper limit of the 0-axis high frequency, resulting in the need to strictly control the equivalent vibration weight. After the material structure of the diaphragm is selected, it basically does not move. In order to meet certain strength requirements, the weight of the diaphragm can basically not move much (the bottom limit is reached, and the low strength is not enough, the problem is serious), You can only start with the voice coil. The voice coil basically cannot move when the parameter requirements are met, so the only thing that can move is the coil width of the voice coil (the coil width refers to the height of the voice coil winding). Therefore, although traditional products of this type can be used with small tube amplifiers, they will feel weak once they reach a large dynamic occasion (that is, they are often said to be overwhelming). Many fans who don`t understand may misunderstand that there is a problem with the amplifier or the combination of the cabinet. They rarely suspect that it is a problem with the unit. Many people think that it is not dynamic when they look at such a large size, such as 8 inches, you think no problem ?!actually speaker size also influence it.
